4.5.13

On April 5th I listened to Quicksand Slip and Fugazi In On The Kill Taker, two post-hardcore classics released just five months apart in 1993, twenty fucking year ago. I also listened to The Bronx The Bronx IV, not the Mariachi crap.

It sure was hip to listen to Quicksand in the early 90’s! As much as I really didn't care about Fugazi back in the day I was kind of ambivalent towards Quicksand. I liked "Dine Alone," I loved their Smiths cover of “How Soon Is Now,” and sometimes when I would hear other stuff from this album, I’d get annoyed. I wasn't a fan of the genre. Everybody was really into Helmet too. I never got Helmet. I still don't get Helmet. I love the word Helmet, but not the band.

Oddly enough, Walter Schreifels, from Quicksand, went on to form Rival Schools and I love them. But, they sound exactly like Quicksand. I’m really a complex guy.

The whole time I was listening to Slip, all I could think about was the video for “Cosmopolitan Bloodless” by Glassjaw. I was thinking about it so much I had to pause Quicksand and go watch Glassjaw online. I had no idea there was an alternate ending! I only knew the ending where Vincent Gallo just knocks over their shit and gives ‘em a “Sup?” kind of look. You should watch that video right now!

Back to Quicksand. I still like “Dine Alone.” “Lie And Wait” starts off a little slow but really plows home a hard ending. “Unfulfilled” is fucking awesome and now I’m wondering if I’m gonna fall in love with Fugazi, who are coming up next. Fat chance. But Helmet’s Meantime just go thrown on the list for next month. By the bye, May is “Anything Goes” month. When I saw anything goes, I mean anything goes! Here’s what May Day is going to feature; Slayer Seasons In The Abyss, Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Weird Al Yankovic Dare To Be Stupid!

Back to Quicksand, again. “Can Opener,” and “Omission,” both awesome. Thank you 2013 The Year Of Music for giving me the opportunity to catch up with something I was missing out on, even if its twenty years later.

Every time a Fugazi fan has tried to convert me they’d always say listen to Steady Diet Of Nothing. Boy, were they pushing me towards the wrong album cause I just didn't get that one.

It’s been a really long time since anyone has tried to get me to “like” Fugazi too.

I don’t know if I’m still high on Quicksand and more tolerable, but I’m in on In On The Kill Taker. I can’t believe I never heard “Smallpox Champion.” It’s so annoying, in that I know it would have annoyed anyone around me while I listened to it!

I might be warming up to Fugazi after all. "After all. After all, they let you decide!" Sorry, I still got Glassjaw stuck in my head.

Ladies and gentlemen, here's your Album Of The Fuckin' Year... so far!

God damn has The Bronx been around for ten years already? It seems like only yesterday they “got cancer looking for the answer.”

They've been doing this Mariachi band thing, which I barely paid attention to, maybe I’ll give it another listen, but I was psyched to get another Rock record from this ironically named L.A. band.

Ten years can do a couple things to a band. It could find them hitting their stride as strong as ever. It could find them tired and rehashing the past, or switching it all up and moving in a different direction. The Bronx spent nearly half its existence moving in a unbelievably different direction, Mariachi, and that break definitely helped them keep their stride for their fourth Rock album.

The snarl and the swagger is still there. Nobody can chew on a biting social commentary and spit it out in a catchy hard Rock ball of disdain like The Bronx can! "Inside my house. I shoot to kill. I don't fuck around!"

"The Unholy Hand," kicks off IV with a traditional Bronx cheer. (Yes! I did.) "Are you the Antichrist or the Holy Ghost? Do you wanna die or just come real close?"

Couple songs towards the end fizzle out, but not a disappointed from The Bronx on their long awaited return to Rock.

Somebody go tell all the assholes drinking the My Bloody Valentine Kool-aid that there's a new sheriff in town, and he's gonna kick their fucking teeth in for being a bunch of douches.

Tomorrow is Madchester Day! Happy MondaysStone Roses... Second Coming, so don't get too excited, and I Am Kloot's latest.
